Pixel Matrix, Ballroom and DanceSport

Over the past 10 years, we have had the opportunity to attend and work with many Ballroom DanceSport Events across Australia.

DanceSport is a combination of ballroom and latin stylings and has competitions across Australia and around the world. DanceSport encourages activity, making it a fast paced event. This sets a photographic challenge shooting moving subjects in various light conditions.

Photographing Ballroom, from a non-dancing background, proved a challenge. We have developed our own style capturing not only a pose but more of the “moment”.  This is assisted through using a variety of different light sources to enhance the atmosphere in the frame.

Introduction of Video

More recently Pixel Matrix has had the opportunity to work with DanceSport Live filming some of these events. The video setup has been a trial and error process. We are continually refining our systems to best suit the industry. Like many other industries, documentation is an important tool. These tools like photography and video encourage people to try or recommend the sport. It is important we use these tools to help inspire a new generation of dancers.

Photography and video go further than offering documentation for couples and events. It allowers competition organizers and promoters to work closer with sponsorship groups. This allows photography and video to be sold as premium advertising products.

BALLROOM EVENT COMING UP – Geelong Classic

This coming weekend 2 September 2017 we have the opportunity to travel to Victoria and attend the Geelong Classic. This will be a first time in Geelong for us and we really look forward to the opportunity and sharing the videos with the members.

A BTS look at our “Chalk” video with Dance Sport Live.

The past three years has been quite chaotic for us. When looking back to review them we see we have made quite a few changes. These changes have been a whole range of different things spreading right across the industry.

Over the next couple of week’s we will be posting both here and at My Pixel Strategy about some these activities. We will also bring everyone up to speed with our future projects in the pipeline!!!

CHALK!

Now for those that may have been following you would have seen that we have had involvement with DanceSport Australia, DanceSport Live and a National dance project named P5000.

We had the opportunity of working with dance couple Annalisa Zoanetti and Sigurdur Thor Sigurdsson on a video named “Chalk.” Chalk was shot in our white studio with coloured Holi Powder which was exciting in itself.

Preparation

We began by repainting our white studio and clearing as much space as possible. This video was going to be a good opportunity for each team to play with a range of different toys.

Chalk! was shot on a combination of camera systems. These include:

  • 3 of Nikon’s D800
  • 2 DJI Osmos
  • 1 Blackmagic Production Camera(In the coming weeks, I will also be doing reviews of different cameras and accessories I have used and recommend which will include the DJI Osmo.)

Martha Williams made up some white outfits for the couple which allowed us to set a soft scene with the white on white tones. We began to shoot our video in a clean, white studio. To start we had Annalisa and Siggy dance the rhumba with a close more intimate type feel. As the rumba finished we introduced a chachacha and with the chachacha came the holi powder. Dallas Williams of DanceSport Live directed the dancers through the shoot which was a major assistance due to his intimate knowledge and experience throughout the Dancesport Industry.

Using a variety of different cameras with different sensors proved a little more challenging than expected. Although in a controlled environment the Osmo’s broke up rather quickly in post production. We used the Blackmagic Production Camera as our main unit and the Nikon D800’s on a Ronin-M gimbal, a DitoGear Omni Slider and the third rigged up on a tripod. Using the Osmo cameras allowed the team to use them on poles to offering a variety of different angles and they also have a slow motion option of 120 frames per second which came in handy later in post production also.

The Process

Now none of us had used holi powder before in this capacity so we were not quite sure what to expect. It looked amazing and the contrast against the white was brilliant. We holi was a fine powder and knew it was obviously bright. What we had no comprehension of how much it was going to get in everything. Up the noses. In our mouth. Stain everything! I was cleaning equipment for weeks after continually finding more powder 🙁

The Cleanup

So after everything was shot and completed we were left with a cleanup job. Initially, vacuuming up the powder would leave a few scuff marks. Vacuuming was a lengthy process. The rollers on the vacuum cleaner just made sure holi powder was really rubbed in. Next came the paint. From the first push of the white roller, I knew that we were going to need more than a simple cover up. I went back to Bunnings to purchase a bucket of 30% grey and proceeded to coat the white cyclorama and excess holi powder. Unfortunately, this would turn out to be the easiest part of the process. 🙁

After painting the studio grey I could then paint my first topper of white. In the past, this process required 8 – 10 litres of paint. This time my first coat barely covered the grey no matter how thick I put it on. I proceeded to feed it four more coats which was an extra 60 litres of paint!! At this stage, things were starting to look much better and I went home and would return the following week. To my disgust on my return, I had not realized that there were clumps of holi powder on the roof which had fallen down over the past week directly on the white giving it red spots and a red tint. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Fortunately, it only required one more coat from there as it was light enough to hide but that was a slow painful way to lose $1600 worth of white paint for $40 worth of holi powder. In saying that I only used half so if there are any studios looking for some please just ask. 🙂

This is Part 2 of the beautiful wedding of Tara and Ben; the winners of our 2016 Ideal Bride Expo Competition.  You can find Part 1 RIGHT HERE.

We left you previously with the happy couple just having been introduced to their guests as Mr and Mrs Morriss for the very first time.  This is where as photographers, we get to be a little more creative for the bridal party photographs.

As Mother Nature was threatening with dark skies and wind and rain, we decided to complete all photography on site as our original plan to head to the beach was not going to work!  So Hemi and Tan got creative with some off camera flash, and the results are gorgeous!

There was just so much love between this couple.  Ben couldn’t take his eyes off his gorgeous bride!

We turned to head inside, just in time as the skies opened up and a tropical storm arrived in full force!

It didn’t affect their day at all though, and in the restaurant the real fun began!

It was beautifully decorated, with the centrepiece an amazing cake created by Whipped Cake Co and gifted to Tara and Ben by Tara’s proud sister Keri-Anne.

There were personal touches everywhere with every female guest being gifted a beautiful hand-embroidered heart to take home.  Each one was lovingly created by Ben’s step-mother.

Guests filled out a lovely guest book and completed their entries with cute Polaroid photos to share their wishes.

The cake was cut.  The speeches were had with much riotous laughter.  A beautiful first dance was completed too.

All of the elements came together to create a perfect traditional white wedding.

And finally their big day culminated with one of the funniest garter throws ever!

Of course, with Hemi and Tan being creative little beasts, we couldn’t let them escape without adding some very special touches to some of their favourite images from the day.  And here is what they came up with…

We’d like to thank The Golden Ox at Margate for being such gracious hosts and making it a breeze for us to work.  Tara and Ben were such deserving winners of our big “$6K Wedding Giveaway” and we are so excited to be counting down the days until we launch the next one on the 18-19th February at the 2017 Ideal Bride Expo at Brisbane City Hall.

Tara and Ben – Ideal Bride Expo Competition Winners Part 1 – Some of you may remember that in March last year, we attended the Ideal Bride Expo at Brisbane City Hall, and did something crazy! We ran a competition to give away a wedding photography package worth over $6000!

From all of the entries, we drew around 30 Finalists. Each of these couples came out to the studio to be pampered and primed for an awesome Engagement Session – on us!!

From each engagement session, our couples chose their favourite image, and we then posted those online for a round of voting. It was such a fun competition that we are about to launch it for the second time at the Ideal Bride Expo on 18-19 February THIS year (2017).

Here is just a small sample of the shots that we captured during the previous engagement sessions:

As you can see we had an absolute ball with all of the lovely couples that we met, and right until the very last day, the voting was neck’n’neck!

But in the end, young parents Tara and Ben proved to be our winners and together with their baby boy Chase, they went on to organise their wedding for 3 December 2016 at the well known Golden Ox, at Margate.

With a new baby and a wedding to plan for, we couldn’t have chosen a more deserving couple to be our winners and we were excitedly looking forward to their big day!

The day proved to be a windy one, and stormy too!  As is typical of the weather in Brisbane at that time of year.  However, putting their heads together, Hemi and Tan were able to come up with some fantastic ideas and scenarios that ensured Tara and Ben received the wedding images that they dreamed of!

They started their day by joining Tara and her bridesmaids for their final preparations at Tara and Ben’s home.  Hemi and Tan ensured that every exciting detail was capture to perfection for the blushing bride.  Even a certain little man who wasn’t so sold on the festivities going on around his highchair!

Ideal Brides Pixel Matrix 2016 Winners Tara and Ben Tara was a stunning bride, choosing a traditional and classic look, combined with some modern touches to ensure a timeless result.

Tara’s beautiful flowers were provided by Brisbane Flowers, and her beautiful gown was from Love Show.  JPs Hair Beauty Body ensured that all of the girls had perfect hair and makeup and the tangerine gowns worn by Tara’s bridesmaids were purchased from P.S. Frocks.

This truly was a family affair with so many little personal touches through-out the day to remind guests just how important Tara and Ben and their family are to each other.  Tara’s outfit was made complete by wearing her great grandmother’s brooch, and at the conclusion of the ceremony, she was presented with the horseshoes that her mother carried on her wedding day.

When they arrived at The Golden Ox, Hemi and Tan were greeted by a smiling Ben who couldn’t wait to see his bride for the first time.  Tara was, of course, “traditionally late” and as the minutes ticked by Ben started shaking in his boots, just a little. 🙂

He had nothing to fear though, and before long, the bridal limousine pulled in and the sounds of Pachelbel’s Canon began to fill the air.

Tara’s Mum and Dad stood proudly at the kerb, cradling little Chase, to help her from the car.  Tara’s Mum began the long awaited walk down the aisle with Chase in her arms, soon followed by bridesmaid Caitlin and maid-of-honour Keri-Anne.

Finally the moment arrived that Ben got to see his bride for the very first time, and his expression showed that it was absolutely worth the wait!

And then the fun began…

Ideal Brides Pixel Matrix 2016 Winners Tara and Ben

The traditional ceremony was truly a beautiful and joyous celebration, with a few tears shed as their vows were exchanged.

There was laughter and fun too.  It was everything that a wedding should be!

Following on with the traditional theme of the day, they exchanged classically designed yellow gold rings, and sealed their union with a kiss.

Ideal Brides Pixel Matrix 2016 Winners Tara and Ben

This is a couple who are truly in love, and they were caught showing it at every opportunity! Hemi and Tan had many opportunities to capture their genuine closeness and it made it such a lovely day.

After signing the registry, the official announcement was made and Mr and Mrs Morriss were introduced to their guests for the very first time.

Now we have just so many images from this beautiful day to share with you, and this post is getting a little out of hand. 🙂  We’re going to leave it there for now!  So please join us for Part 2 of this very special day in the next post, and please leave a comment or two to congratulate Tara and Ben!
